Born in Bournemouth in 1956, Lionel originally trained as an illustrator, graduating from Bournemouth & Poole College of Art in 1977. After a short spell working for the Ministry of Defence as a civil servant he then left the UK at twenty and spent the next three years working in the former West Germany, finally settling in the beautiful city of Koblenz. There Lionel was inspired to paint landscapes by the beauty of the Mosel and the mighty Rhine. Painting en plein air he produced many small oil studies on the banks of the rivers, which attracted much attention from the strolling tourists and locals.
Lionel returned to the UK in the late 1980's and he worked successfully for many years as a freelance illustrator producing technical and commercial art for advertising and publishing clients including The Eagle comic, Time Life, and the R.N.L.I. Lionel's background in illustration is still evident in the precise draughtsmanship of his work.
Lionel now lives in his native Dorset, with the nearby coast and rolling hills providing much inspiration and material for his landscape and marine paintings. Walking in all weathers he sketches in pencil, paints in watercolour and oil and photographs the countryside, architecture and coastal areas of Dorset, Devon and Hampshire. Lionel's work can be found in private collections across the UK.
